Northern Red Oak
Quercus rubra
Introduction
Northern red oak is a major hardwood of Northern Appalachian slopes and uplands. It has a clean strong form, pointed leaves, large acorns, and bark that often shows pale vertical ridges.
Quick Facts
Where it Grows
In Northern Appalachia, northern red oak grows with sugar maple, red maple, beech, white ash, black cherry, hemlock, and white pine. It does well on fertile slopes and uplands.
How to Identify It
Look for bristle-tipped lobed leaves, large acorns with shallow caps, and mature bark with pale ridge lines. The leaf lobes are pointed, not rounded.
Importance to the Appalchia Ecosystem
Northern red oak provides acorns for wildlife and supports canopy insects. It is an important mast and timber tree in mixed Appalachian forests.

Human Uses
The wood is widely used for flooring, furniture, cabinets, veneer, trim, and other hardwood products.
Interesting Facts
The bark ridges can resemble ski tracks.
Its acorns need two growing seasons to mature.
It is one of the most commercially important red oaks.
Look-Alikes
It can be confused with black oak, scarlet oak, and pin oak. Northern red oak usually has broader leaves and shallower acorn cups than scarlet oak.
Cautions and Common Problems
Oak wilt, oak decline, drought, and defoliating insects can affect it. Deer browse can limit regeneration.
Seasonal Interest
Spring brings catkins. Summer canopy is broad and deep green. Fall color is red to russet. Winter bark is a strong field clue.
In the Appalachian Landscape
Northern red oak gives Northern Appalachian forests mast, timber, and height. It stands between the sugar maple woods and the drier oak ridges.
